Description: A controversial tale of friendship and tragedy during the Great Depression
They are an unlikely pair: George is "small and quick and dark of face"; Lennie, a man of tremendous size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a "family," clinging together in the face of loneliness and alienation.
Laborers in California's dusty vegetable fields, they hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations of a flirtatious woman, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him.
Hello.
I am reviewing Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I read this book for the first time when it was a book on my summer reading list for school. I am not sure if it is now but this book was assigned to most people that I have encountered over time. Schools loved to assign it as part of their classic literature lessons. I completely understand why they do. Any quotes that may appear below are from the text and not my words.
This is one of those books that I was assigned in school that I have read multiple times. I always remember that it was a good read but I forget why so I reread it every few years. What can I say? I geniunely love this book. It is beautiful and heartbreaking. Steinbeck wrote about what he knew. His life experiences about the Great Depression in The Dust Bowl appear in his work.
This book revolves around two friends that are searching for the American dream during one of the hardest economic times in history. Two friends that couldn't be more different and yet their friendship helps define them. They make big plans for the future and use those thoughts to help them get through hard days and nights. They encounter great challenges and their friendship is tested. Finally, their bond is truly shown when chaos occurs and decisions have to be made.
There is a reason that this book is viewed as one of the greatest written. It is fantastic. I am assigning this book a Five Blue Book rating because it is incredible Beautifully written with strong characterizations, it takes you into this world of great hardship and shows you that friendship, true friendship, can be everything.
